Daytona Beach is home to the area's most impressive museum. The Museum of Arts and Sciences (1040 Museum Blvd.; 386-255- 0285) is a comprehensive art, science and Florida history museum. The Center for History covers all periods of Florida history; Florida's East Coast Pirates exhibit has cannons, swords, Spanish treasure and lots of other objects from the 1700s and 1800s. The Root Americana Wing features automobiles, railroad cars and the history of the teddy bear - told by 1,000 bears. There's also a special Children's Wing.

Also in Daytona Beach is the Halifax Historical Museum (252 S. Beach St.; 386-255- 6976), which displays artifacts from Volusia County's plantation and pioneer era. The museum has an extensive local history collection of books, maps, documents, photos and postcards. Located in the 1910 Merchants Bank Building, where wealthy winter residents did their banking, hand-painted murals depict early Florida history.

The Historic Fire Station No.1 at the corner of Beach Street and Orange Avenue (386- 258-3184) was built in 1926. Restored in 1999, it displays memorabilia of this part of Daytona's history.

On the grounds of the Daytona Beach International Speedway, Daytona USA (1801 W. International Speedway Blvd.; 386-947- 6800) offers a close-up look at the history and sport of auto racing. There's an IMAX theater and interactive exhibits and a great restaurant. Next door is Volusia County's largest visitor center.

The Klassix Auto Museum (2909 W. International Speedway Blvd.; 386-252-3800) also offers a collection of cars, motorcycles and racing memorabilia. You can even see an original Batmobile from the 1960s television show. There are lots of nearby restaurants, including Hops Grill (1950 W. International Speedway Blvd.; 386-323-0752), which features homemade food and beer.
