(1380 S. Greenwood Ave.; 727-446-4250) was
originally part of the tiny community of Belleair
that sprang up with the construction of Henry
Plant's Hotel Belleview. It is now a history
museum for Clearwater.
Other interesting areas of historical significance
include the restored Largo Feed Store
(295 Central Park Dr.; 727-587-6751); the Largo
Central Railroad (in the city's Central Park,
727-585-9835) with rides behind an operating
steam engine; The Indian Rocks Area Historical Museum (1507 Palm Bay Blvd.;
727-593-3861); and the Gulfport Historical Society Museum (5301 28th Ave. S.; 727-327-
0505).
Safety Harbor was a health resort at the turn of the century attracting tourists with its five natural mineral springs. The Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History (329 S. Bayshore Blvd.; 727-726-1668) tells this story. Today, the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa
(105 N. Bayshore Blvd.; 727-726-1161) is built over the springs. The facilities were built
between 1936 and 1945.
In Pass-A-Grille, the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum (115 10th Ave.; 727-360-2491) is another satellite facility of the Pinellas County Historical Museum (727-582-2123). Exhibits tell the history of the barrier island off the west coast of the
Pinellas Peninsula.
South of St. Pete Beach is Fort DeSoto Park. Construction of a fort here began during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Here you can view the fort's shot
rooms and powder magazines and walk atop the ruins of its walls.
