The c. 1896 Plumb House in Clearwater (1380 S. Greenwood Ave.; 727-446-4250) was originally part of the tiny community of Belleair that sprang up with the construction of Henry Plant's Hotel Belleview. It is now a history museum for Clearwater.

Other interesting areas of historical significance include the restored Largo Feed Store (295 Central Park Dr.; 727-587-6751); the Largo Central Railroad (in the city's Central Park, 727-585-9835) with rides behind an operating steam engine; The Indian Rocks Area Historical Museum (1507 Palm Bay Blvd.; 727-593-3861); and the Gulfport Historical Society Museum (5301 28th Ave. S.; 727-327- 0505).

Safety Harbor was a health resort at the turn of the century attracting tourists with its five natural mineral springs. The Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History (329 S. Bayshore Blvd.; 727-726-1668) tells this story. Today, the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa (105 N. Bayshore Blvd.; 727-726-1161) is built over the springs. The facilities were built between 1936 and 1945.

In Pass-A-Grille, the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum (115 10th Ave.; 727-360-2491) is another satellite facility of the Pinellas County Historical Museum (727-582-2123). Exhibits tell the history of the barrier island off the west coast of the Pinellas Peninsula.

South of St. Pete Beach is Fort DeSoto Park. Construction of a fort here began during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Here you can view the fort's shot rooms and powder magazines and walk atop the ruins of its walls.
