Visit the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park on Anastasia Island (999 Anastasia Blvd.; 904-824-3337), one of Florida's earliest tourist attractions. Founded in 1893, it's the only facility in the world where living examples of all known species of alligators and crocodiles can be seen. From here continue on to the Anastasia State Recreation Area (Hwy. A1A; 904-461-2033) to see the coquina quarries from where the stone was taken to construct the Castillo de San Marcos and other St. Augustine buildings. Fifteen miles south on AIA is Fort Matanzas, built in 1740, and now operated by the National Park Service. A ferry takes you to the fort for a guided tour (904-471-0116).

In Palatka, visit the Putnam County Historical Museum (100 Madison St.; 904- 319-0140), next door to the splendid antebellum Bronson-Mulholland House.
